A couple weeks ago I spun up some alpaca that was dyed by my friend Kim. I decided to use this handspun on my first handspun weaving project. I used a store bought warp, and used my handspun for the weft. I learned tons doing this first scarf. Next time, I will warp with larger spaces so that the bumpy lumpy parts of the handspun are not hidden. Also, I will make sure if I am doing color changes that I actually keep track of how many rows were woven with each color. But all in all, I am pretty happy with my first scarf! And warping was not as scary as I thought it would be!
Kelly--You are Miss Awesome Fiber Maniac lately...felting, spinning, now weaving?!?!? You are a grrrl gone wild!
ReplyDeleteI love the texture of the scarf, it looks really cool :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your first scarf. It looks great.
ReplyDeleteWeaving can be such a tricky thing with having to worry about warp and weft. It's so hard for me to imagine how the finished project will turn out and once you've warped your pretty much committed.
Good luck with your future weaving projects.
Happy Fiber Arts Friday!!
Heather- I figured I better do something with all of this handspun. I have REALLY tried to like knitting...I just don't have the patience. Crochet is fine, but I have only the basic skills and there are only so many cowls a girl can wear in Florida!
ReplyDeletePink- Thanks so much!
Melissa- that's how I felt after warping it.....I wasn't getting the effect I was looking for, but did not want to start again...live and learn!
love it!
ReplyDeletebut what is a warp?
Riet-
ReplyDeleteThe warp is the black yarn that I wove into- or the vertical long part of the scarf. Thanks!
I love it ... the black warp makes it really amazing!
ReplyDeleteReally love this. What a beautiful example of weaving.
ReplyDeleteKelly its beautiful!
ReplyDeleteYou do have your fingers in lots of fibre-pies :)

Hooray! You are weaving! Yes, I am still working with the whole warp to weft ratio so that my weave has more give and drape (especially if it's a scarf) . I am using my first few scarves to donate to charity. Keep on weaving. I know you read my blog so...if you refer back to the last few months worth of weaving, I list some books and resources for weaving. I have a thread in the Wonder Why Alpaca Farm Group on Ravelry too that has handy resource.
ReplyDeleteYes Deborah, I think it's called Fiber ADD! :)
ReplyDeleteAndrea, I have been looking at all the info I can find on Ravelry. I will look back through your group and pick your brain if I have any questions.
Your scarf is beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI love the lumpy, bumpy texture a handspun yarn gives to a weaving project. It always makes it more rustic, which I love. :-)
I too love the texture of that scarf - that's great for a first weaving project!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
ReplyDeleteVery pretty!
