About a month ago I was able to watch a lady spin on a spinning wheel. It was almost hypnotic watching, and seemed to be such a calming activity that I was really wanting to learn how to do it myself. I was too shy to ask her if I could try. I finally decided that I wanted to learn how but was not sure about driving over an hour each way to take lessons. So I did what I always do....I jumped in with two feet and decided I would teach myself. Ha! Needless to say I think I might finally have figured it out.....sortof. I will say that once I got beyond trying to figure out tension settings and found a rhythm, it was very relaxing and I was so thrilled with my first spin and ply that I cannot wait to try again!
Now for those of you who have mastered this...please don't laugh...lol :) oh heck who cares...laugh, I'm so stinkin' excited with it no matter how fluffy and over spun/underspun it is! :) I feel like a little kid who made a picture that they are so proud of!!!
Kelly--Your yarn is great!! You should feel very proud (and not the least bit self-conscious!!)

Oh my goodness. I have been teaching myself to spin for ages and I can make something as nice as what you have. you should be really really proud. What are you going to make with it??

ReplyDeleteI love the colours and think its beautiful! I too was proud of my first ever real go. Its fun spinning and becomes addictive. I now like making art yarns and adding other fibres too.

It's beautiful! There is a spinner inside each of us...don't feel self-conscious. Just feel the fiber and enjoy every draft and every treadle. Spinning has changed my life and it has opended the doors to a new respect for fiber arts and the fiber we use, in all fiber arts forms. What we treasure as a felter, we may not enjoy spinning. Why? That's why I'm the Wonder Why Gal...I ask those questions.
ReplyDeleteKeep that yarn as a treasure. I still have my first skeins. They are beautiful and they teach me a lot about how truly beautiful even my un-trained hand made yarn.

My family has had a good chuckle of my first few skeins and so have I. I do know that each time I sit at the wheel, I learn something new about my fiber. :) Thanks again!

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely impressive! One of the things I love about spinning is that once you "get" the basic technique there is so much to do with essentially no rules ;-)

ReplyDeleteI love spinning and had to opportunity to buy a spinning wheel at a great price and turned it down as I didn't have space for it. Now I do and I regret it sorely....great efforts, Kelly. I think better than what I would have done! Practice, pracice...you'll be obsessed!
